(Montgomery, Ala.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s golf team qualified for the 2014 NAIA Women’s Golf National Championship with a second place finish at the 2014 Southern States Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Lagoon Park Golf Club this afternoon.
With their second place finish in the conference tournament, the Loyola women’s golf team earned an automatic bid to the National Championship to be held on Tuesday, May 20 through Wednesday, May 21 at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. This marks the first National Tournament appearance for the Loyola women’s golf program.
In the final round, the Wolf Pack matched their day one team total of 328 for a two-day combined score of 656. They concluded tournament action 13 strokes behind the No.7-ranked first place finishers, the College of Coastal Georgia. The Mariners improved their first round total by seven strokes to secure the championship title, shooting a 318 in the final round.
Four Wolf Pack golfers ended the tournament in the top 20 individually. Freshman Alexis Hazard finished third individually, scoring a career-best 73 and improving her first round score by 10 strokes. Sophomore Alexis Vega ended the tournament tied for ninth place, shooting a two-day total of 164. Freshman Sarah-Anne Smurlick shot an 84 in the final round, increasing her day one score by two, for a 14th place finish. Freshman Julchen Narwark rounded out the top Loyola performers, tying for 19th with a 170 across two days of play.
Freshman Megan Keck ended the tournament in a two-way tie for 32nd place, shooting an 88 on day one and an 89 in the final round.
