(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team sunk the #24 NAIA Division I ranked Lyon College Scots 66-48 in their regular season home opener in The Den on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolf Pack (1-0) wasted no time in the first half, pushing a 10-2 lead following tip off. Sophomore Shayne Charles opened scoring for Loyola with a three-pointer at the top of the key. The Pack offense remained hot through the half, pulling ahead by their largest margin of 14 with 3:46 left to go in the half with the help of a field goal made by senior Jasmine Brewer. The Pack recorded six threes in the front end of the game. Junior Janeicia Neely paced the offense to start with 11 points, three rebounds and four assists in the first 20 minutes.
The Pack played resiliently in the second, taking charge with a 28-point advantage at 7:52 left in the game after Neely nailed a three-point shot off a feed from junior Megan Whittaker. The Scots (1-1) made a desperate push for points, but despite a few Loyola turnovers in the last few minutes of play, Lyon wouldn’t secure a lead for the entire game. Brewer had a breakout second half to help lead the Pack to victory, recording 10 points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Brewer turned in a double double, earning a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds on the afternoon. Additionally, she notched three assists across the game. Neely contributed 17 points, seven rebounds, four steals, four assists and went four for five from the three-point line. Charles added nine points, two steals and one assist.
Sophomore Carina Jackson led the scoring effort for the Scots, tallying 13 points, six rebounds and one assist. Junior Kaley Moore chipped in with seven points, going three for five from the field.
The Wolf Pack will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 7 when they travel to Talladega College for a 5:30 p.m. start.
