Loyola women’s hoops to challenge conference leader

(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team will take on #18 Bethel University on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. in The Den.

The Wolf Pack (18-9, 12-5 SSAC) swept their season series with Spring Hill College after defeating the Badgers 65-48 Thursday night. Junior Janeicia Neely and freshman Caroline Gonzalez posted points in double figures, bucketing 19 and 10 respectively. Senior Jasmine Brewer chipped in with eight points and collected a team-high eight rebounds. Neely paces her squad in average points (13.93) and assists (4.33) per game. Brewer is averaging 7.70 boards and 1.70 steals per contest. Freshman Meghan Temple recorded two blocks versus the Badgers and commands the category with 20 blocks on the season.

The Wildcats (20-7, 13-4 SSAC) are coming off a 74-61 victory over Blue Mountain College. Junior Tayla Foster anchors the scoring effort for Bethel, turning in an average 18.89 points a night. Junior Kenyatta Drake is the rebound leader for the Wildcats, pulling down 10.56 boards per game. Sophomore Jackliann Street steadies her squad in average assists (3.63), steals (1.30) and blocks (0.41) per contest.

Earlier this season, Loyola fell to Bethel on the road, 78-74. The Wolf Pack is tied for second in the SSAC West division while the Wildcats rank first. Loyola is riding a four game win streak and has been victorious in 12 of its last 15 contests. Additionally, the Pack received six votes in the most recent NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

Loyola University New Orleans Athletics and Wellness is partnering with Professor Daniela Marx’s Graphic Design IV class in a special promotion scheduled for the doubleheader on Saturday. Professor Marx’s senior design students are creating portraits of the men’s and women’s basketball players that will be presented at the games. The portraits will be displayed around the gym for the game, and fans will have the opportunity to vote on which portrait they like best. Fans will also be able to purchase the portraits through a silent auction at the basketball games on Saturday with proceeds benefitting the Graphic Design and Athletics and Wellness Departments.
