(Montgomery, Ala.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team dropped a close contest to No. 14 Faulkner University 67-71 in their first conference game of the season on Friday evening in Tine Davis Gymnasium.
The Wolf Pack (2-2, 0-1 SSAC) challenged the Eagles (3-1, 1-0 SSAC) early in the first half, going on an 11-0 run to lead 13-4 at the start. Faulkner fed off a few Loyola turnovers to gain momentum and close the gap, eventually nabbing a 30-29 lead with 3:06 left in the half. The Pack briefly regained the lead following a field goal from junior Cassidy Eymard to make it a 31-30 contest, but the Eagles closed the half ahead by four points.
Loyola led for much of the second half, but three consecutive field goals from Faulkner senior Christina Hayes provided power on the Eagles’ side of the court, putting Faulkner up 59-56. The Wolf Pack maintained a one point lead up to the 2:51 mark, but the Eagles held Loyola to just five points for the remainder of the game as they pulled away with the win.
Junior Janeicia Neely led the scoring effort for the Pack, notching 23 points. Neely went three for seven from three-point range and two for two from the foul line. Additionally, she tallied seven rebounds and two assists. Senior Jasmine Brewer earned her second double double of the season, collecting 20 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Callie McNally joined them in double digits, recording 13 points and going five for seven from the field. She pulled down seven rebounds on the night.
Hayes powered the Eagles’ offense, contributing 24 points to the Faulkner victory. She led her squad on the glass with nine rebounds. Senior Sonja Vuong added 17 points, two rebounds and two assists.
The Wolf Pack will remain in Alabama for their next conference match up versus Auburn University Montgomery on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
