(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team will look to hand two undefeated conference competitors their first losses as the Wolf Pack takes on the College of Coastal Georgia on Friday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m. and Southern Polytechnic State University on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m. in The Den.
The Wolf Pack (3-2, 1-1 SSAC) most recently defeated Auburn University Montgomery 57-50 on Saturday. Junior Janeicia Neely lended a helping hand in the victory, contributing 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist. She paces the Pack, averaging 16 points per game, and leads the squad with 21 assists and 11 steals on the season. Junior Megan Whittaker tallied 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. She shot four for nine from behind the arch. Senior Jasmine Brewer added nine points and seven rebounds while Shayne Charles chipped in with eight points.
The College of Coastal Georgia (6-0, 2-0 SSAC) is coming off a 10-point victory over Belhaven University. Junior Olivia Melvin leads the Mariners’ scoring effort, averaging 15.57 points per contest. Senior Madel Madden ranks first on her squad in assists (43) and steals (22). Freshman Gianna Vastola ranks second in Division I in total rebounds with 75 on the season.
Southern Poly (6-0, 2-0 SSAC) rolled to a 68-52 win over St. Thomas University on Monday. Senior Arnissa Galloway steadies the Hornets in points, averaging 14.5 per contest, and rebounds with 8.67 per match up. Southern Poly sits first in Division I in total blocks with junior Kimdra Reid tallying 2.67 stuffs a night.
The Wolf Pack welcomes Loyola employees to join them for Faculty/Staff Night in The Den during Friday night’s doubleheader. The department that brings the most people to the women's game at 5:30 p.m. and the men's contest with the Mariners at 7:30 p.m. will win the opportunity to display a piece of Loyola history in their respective office, earning temporary ownership of the 1952 Gulf States Conference Track Championship trophy.
Admission is free for faculty, staff and their guests. Guests of faculty and staff members will count toward their respective department's entry into the competition. Family and friends are encouraged to attend. All faculty, staff and guests should check in at the Maroon Platoon table upon arrival to be counted toward the competition.
Also during lunch on Friday, Wolf Pack players and coaches will be in the Orleans Room for the “Eat Your Opponent Promotion” sponsored by Uptown Campus Dining to hand out magnetic basketball schedules for the 2013-14 season. The traditional Catfish Friday lunch menu will feature fare highlighting Friday night’s opponent, the Coastal Georgia Mariners.
The Loyola men’s team will follow the women’s contests this weekend with expected start times to be 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday against Coastal Georgia and Southern Poly respectively.
