(Montgomery, Ala.) The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team will begin SSAC Tournament action on Thursday, March 6 at 4:30 p.m. when they take on Emmanuel College.
The Wolf Pack (20-10, 14-6 SSAC) enters the tournament as the top seed in the SSAC West. They closed the regular season with a 77-49 victory over Blue Mountain College on Saturday. Junior Megan Whittaker sparked the Loyola offense with 17 points. Senior Jasmine Brewer turned in 16 points and led the Pack on the glass with nine rebounds. Brewer paces her squad in average points (13.70), rebounds (7.90) and steals (1.77) per game. Junior Janeicia Neely notched 11 points and recorded a team-leading six assists. She leads the assists category on the season, averaging 4.37 per contest.
As the #4 seed in the SSAC East, the Lions (18-13, 9-11 SSAC) defeated Belhaven, 83-70 in the opening round of the SSAC Tournament. Senior Joreshica Martin, juniors Ashley Skelton and Skye Rogers and freshmen Georgia Brown and Timia Reynolds tallied points in double figures versus the Blazers. Martin secured a team-leading nine rebounds. She leads her team in average points (10.83) and rebounds (6.07) per game.
Loyola has won 14 of their last 18 contests. They defeated Emmanuel on the road on Jan. 10, 67-51. The Wolf Pack’s all-time series versus the Lions is tied, 3-3.
Additionally, Loyola secured an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament on March 19-22 by winning the regular season SSAC West Division title.
