NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team was voted to win the Southern States Athletic Conference West Division and place fourth overall in the coaches’ preseason poll.
Loyola heads into their first season of the SSAC after winning three straight conference championships from 2006-09. The Wolfpack finished last season with a 19-11 record and took third in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference at 12-6.
Loyola received 34 points in the poll which included four first place votes to take the top spot over Auburn University-Montgomery (29). William Carey came in at third (28), followed by Mobile (22), Belhaven (17), Faulkner (9), and Spring Hill (8).
The East features two teams ranked in the Preseason NAIA Top 25 in No. 7 Lee University and No. 21 Southern Poly. Lee, who has won five consecutive SSAC titles, was voted to take the East Division crown as well as the league title while Shorter (47) edged out Southern Poly (46) to take the second spot. The rest of the East standings are Emmanuel (39), Brenau (30), Southern Wesleyan (25), Brewton-Parker (23), Truett-McConnell (13), and Columbia (8).
Lee was the unanimous coaches’ pick to win their sixth straight title, earning the top overall spot with 140 points and 14 first-place votes. Southern Poly finished with 116, followed by Shorter (114), Loyola (104), and William Carey (75).
This year's championship tournament will feature the top 5 teams from each division and will again be held in Rome, Ga. from March 2-5. The play-in round will be held at The Forum, the quarterfinal games at The Darlington School, and the semifinals and finals at The Forum. Floyd County is the presenting sponsor for this event.
