Loyola women extend streak to four games with win at Faulkner

Montgomery, Ala- Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team equaled their season best four game winning streak with a 69-62 victory over Faulkner Saturday afternoon in the Tine Davis Gymnasium.

In a closely contested game that had six ties and as many lead changes, Loyola trailed 11-4 early in the first half before scoring eight unanswered with four coming from Jasmine Brewer to make the score 13-11 with 10:15 remaining in the half.

Faulkner responded with a 7-0 run with Jae Mitchell’s three pointer pushing the advantage to six points. The Eagles held the lead until Rachel Nolan converted a pair of free throws for Loyola give the Wolfpack a 26-22 advantage with 2:43 left in the opening period. The stanza ended with Loyola leading 30-27.

In the second half, Faulkner rallied and took the lead four minutes after play resumed with a jumper by Brittney Carter. Later, the Eagles enjoyed their largest margin of the stanza as Sonja Vuong converted a field goal to make the score 43-37 with 13:26 to play.

The Wolfpack rattled off 14 unanswered points over the next five minutes and never trailed the rest of the way. Jackie Padilla put the game out of reach with back to back three pointers, the last gave Loyola a 62-51 advantage with 3:48 to play. It was the ‘Pack’s only double digit lead of the game.

Faulkner would pull no closer than five points over the last three minutes as the Wolfpack the victory that gave them sole possession of second place in the SSAC West. Loyola trails Belhaven by 2.5 games and leads William Carey by a half a game as the Lady Saders currently sit in third.

Loyola (17-8, 5-3 SSAC) had four players in double figures with Keiva Council leading with 15 points. Padilla had 12 points with nine coming from behind the arc. Brewer finished with 13 points and a team high seven rebounds. Nolan came off the bench to add 10.

For Faulkner (18-7, 4-4 SSAC), Carter had an impressive performance with 25 points and 21 rebounds for the double double.

The Wolfpack returns to action on Thursday, February 17 against Belhaven in Jackson with tip off slated for 5:30 p.m.
