Jackson, Miss.- Belhaven University had four players in double figures as the Blazers defeated Loyola University New Orleans 87-69 in women’s basketball Thursday night at the Rugg Arena.
For Belhaven (21-6, 9-1 SSAC), Kiara Johnson led all scorers with 23 points on 6 of 14 shooting from the field and 11 of 16 from the free throw line. Sarah Carr had 17 and Regena Jackson added 16. Erica Leflore came off the bench to score 13.
Jasmine Brewer paced the Wolfpack with 17 points and 11 rebounds. It was the 14th consecutive game that the freshman from Houston scored in double figures. It was also the fourth double double of Brewer’s career. Amy Moody came off the bench to score 15 and Keiva Council added 12.
The Blazers forced 21 Wolfpack turnovers, while committing only 10 on the evening. Belhaven enjoyed an advantage in field goal percentage, coverting on 51.6% of shots taken and 45.5% from distance. Loyola converted 35.6% from the field and 31.3% from behind the arc. The Wolfpack did convert 78.6% of their free throws, while Belhaven only made 58.1%.
Loyola (17-9, 5-4 SSAC) had won four consecutive, which equaled their longest win streak of the season. Loyola maintains a slim margin for second place in the SSAC West standings. The Wolfpack currently hold a half game lead over William Carey. Faulkner and Mobile trail Loyola by a game. The victory clinched the SSAC West Division Title for the Blazers.
Loyola returns to action on Saturday against Auburn-Montgomery with tip off in The Den slated for 2 p.m. Tickets for students, faculty, and staff are free with a valid Loyola ID.
