Shreveport, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team traveled to The Dock on Friday night to face LSU-Shreveport in the GCAC Tournament semifinals and were defeated 75-62.
The Lady Pilots led from the start and went into the half up 43-29. Loyola (19-11) was able to bring the deficit to six points midway through the second period, but LSUS answered with a couple big baskets as they advanced to the GCAC finals.
Loyola was led by All-GCAC duo Trenese Smith and Keiva Council. Smith had a game-high 20 points and Council finished with 16. Amy Sprout came off the bench to lead with nine rebounds.
LSU-S (23-5) was led by TiKandis Edwards and Valarie Huizar with 15 points each. Three players had 10 points; Renalda Stafford, Tish Flowers, and Sharday Cotton, who also had a game-high 16 rebounds.
The Lady Pilots used the three ball in the first half, hitting six from behind the arc. Huizar made two in the early going, then ended the half with her third. Smith led the ‘Pack with 13 points and made three three-pointers as well.
In the second stanza, Loyola held the Lady Pilots scoreless during a six minute span, and a three by Council made the score 51-45 with less than nine minutes left. On LSUS’s next two possessions, Flowers and Stafford made baskets to push to lead back to 10 points.
Loyola pressed the rest of the way and was then forced to foul, and LSUS made eight free throws down the stretch to knock the Wolfpack out of the tournament.
Loyola shot 36.2 percent from the field and was out rebounded 41-31. The Lady Pilots finished at 43.3 percent shooting for the night.
