Loyola women fall to No. 17 Xavier, 77-52

New Orleans, La.- Jasmine Brewer recorded the first double double of her career, but it was not enough as Loyola University New Orleans fell to Xavier of Louisiana 77-52 in women’s basketball Saturday evening in The Barn.

Loyola led before the start of the game as Xavier was assessed an administrative technical prior to tip off. Keiva Council converted a pair of free throws to give LU a 2-0 lead.

On the Gold Nuggets first possession, Jazmone Kelly gave XU a lead that they would not relinquish when she converted a three point play.

The Xavier lead would grow to as many as seven points over the next nine minutes. Loyola answered to make it a one possession game with a pair of free throws from Megen Berner to make it 15-12 XU with 10:21 left in the half.

Keldra Hall capped a 13-0 Xavier run over the next four minutes converting one of two free throws to give the Nuggets command of the game.

Berner cut the lead to 10 points with 4:36 left in the half with two more free throws. She was a perfect 8 for 8 from the line on the evening.

The Nuggets closed out the half with a 10-3 run to make the score 38-21 at the break.

In the second half, Xavier extended the margin to 20 points on a jumper by Hall with 17:25 to play.

Later, XU led by as many as 26 points on the night. The last came with 2:08 to play on a field goal by Chelsea Broussard.

Jasmine led Loyola with 24 points and grabbed a career high 11 rebounds. Council had 11 points to round out the leaders for the Wolfpack (12-5).

For Xavier (16-5), Kelly had a team high 17 points on 8-13 shooting from the field. Hall finished with 13 points. Marchelle Jones added 12. Christina Warren grabbed a team high eight rebounds, while scoring 10 points.

The Gold Nuggets, currently ranked 17th in the latest NAIA poll, had a decisive shooting advantage in the contest, converting 53.3% of field goals attempted. They held Loyola to a 28.3% clip. Loyola made 89.3% of their free throws. Xavier converted just 50% on the evening.

The Wolfpack returns to action on Thursday in their SSAC home opener against Faulkner. Tip off in The Den is slated for 5:30 p.m.
