NEW ORLEANS - Keiva Council scored 20 points and Amy Sprout had a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds, to lead the Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team to a 76-48 victory over the University of New Orleans on Saturday afternoon at Lakefront Arena.
Field goals by Council and Sprout gave LU a 4-0 lead to start the game before Mirjam Sipos, who led UNO with 13 points, made a three at the 16:43 mark. However, the ‘Pack would not let the Lady Privateers get any closer the rest of the way as they cruised to a 28-point win.
Loyola (8-3) had nine players crack the scoring column in the game and outscored UNO’s bench 25-8. The reserves were led by freshmen Jasmine Brewer with nine points and Bridget Balsam tied her career-best with eight. The Wolfpack shot 40.9 percent from the field while holding UNO (0-8) to 29 percent.
LU out rebounded UNO, 48-40, led by juniors Sprout and Council with 10 and nine respectively. Sprout’s 11 points was a season high as she notched her second double-double of the season. Council added six assists and five steals.
LU led 9-7 early on before holding UNO scoreless over a four minute span to take a 21-7 lead. UNO managed to cut the deficit to six, but the ‘Pack closed out the half with a 14-5 run to go into the break leading 39-24.
Following the intermission, the Maroon and Gold’s lead swelled to 21 points after a pair of free throws from Jackie Padilla, who finished with nine points. The ‘Pack grabbed their largest lead of the day, 76-45, late in the game before UNO’s Kendracia Valmont knocked down a three at the buzzer.
Following a break for finals, Loyola returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 18, when they host St.Thomas (Fla.) at The Den at 2 p.m.
