New Orleans, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team kicks off post-season play on Wednesday night at The Den with a quarterfinal match-up against the University of Mobile at 7 P.M.
After being the top team in the conference the last three seasons, the Wolfpack will try to defend their tournament title as the #3 seed. Loyola (18-10, 12-6 GCAC) closed out the regular season with a loss at William Carey after winning four of their last five.
Loyola’s all-time leading scorer, Trenese Smith, heads the Wolfpack offense with 17.2 points per game. Smith finished the season as the top scorer in the GCAC for the second time in her career. Sophomore Keiva Council rounds out the leading scorers at 12.2 ppg.
Mobile (17-11, 9-9 GCAC) earned the #6 seed after winning their last two games. On Saturday, they knocked off cross-town rival Spring Hill 71-58.
The Lady Rams are led by three players averaging nine points with center Alice Honnery at 9.6, Davina Jefferson at 9.5, and Adrienne Mackay at 9.1. Honnery leads the NAIA in blocks at 4.6 per game and is 21st in rebounds with nine.
Loyola and Mobile each won at home this year in their regular season match-ups. The Wolfpack dropped the GCAC opener 64-55 on Jan. 7, with Honnery leading the way for Mobile with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocks. With the help of 32 points from the bench, Loyola was able to avenge the loss at The Den on Feb. 6, beating the Lady Rams 57-45.
