NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s tennis teams will kick off their 2011 season on Saturday against Belhaven University and Tougaloo College.
This year marks the first season LU’s men’s tennis program will compete, under the guidance of Zubin Engineer, who began coaching the women’s team last year.
The women’s team is led by returning number one singles player Claire Landry, who transferred to LU from NCAA Division I Lipscomb. Landry is a former high school state doubles champion. Frances Bonnin and Katie Beargie are among the other Wolfpack players who look to have a major impact in 2011.
Having to build the team from scratch, Coach Engineer has a solid men’s squad this season, including seniors Brian Pena and Jordan Hunting, as well as junior Christian Manrubia. Pena was one of the top junior players in Louisiana, and will compete for the ’Pack at the number one singles position.
Last weekend was scheduled to be the start of Loyola’s tennis season, but those matches were rained out.
This weekend’s matches will take place at the tennis complex of the University of New Orleans on Feb. 5, with the first matches slated to begin at 10 a.m. against Tougaloo and 2 p.m. against Belhaven.
