NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University men’s (3-8) and women’s (4-8) tennis teams concluded the 2012 season with their first berth to the Conference Tournament as both teams were set to compete against Spring Hill. The men battled hard against the Badgers but fell in a close 5-4 match while the women dropped their match 9-0.
The loss marked the end of the road for three outstanding seniors who contributed so much to the Loyola tennis program in the beginning stages of development. Katie Beargie, Alexandra Chater, and Brian Peña ended their careers at LU in their first appearance in the SSAC Tournament.
Both teams saw much improvement from a year ago with the Wolfpack men bettering its record with three wins and the women tying its best record since 2010 with four wins. Junior Devon Belcher and freshman Meghan deBaroncelli finished the season with winning records at the no. 1 seed. Both Belcher and deBaroncelli went 7-5.
While the Wolfpack begins a new tradition with the growth of the tennis program, both teams continued Loyola’s tradition of excellence in the classroom. The ‘Pack women earned a 3.39 GPA while the men produced a 3.06 GPA. Three women’s players and two men’s players were named SSAC All-Academic. For the women, senior Katie Beargie and sophomores Chelsea Keene and Cristiana Krtalic received the honor. Beargie was also named a NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete. As for the men, juniors Joshua Laviolette and Joshua Washington earned their spots on the list. In addition, senior Brian Peña and freshman sensation Meghan deBaroncelli both landed on the SSAC’s Musco Lighting Champions of Character Team.
The tennis teams continued their off the court efforts with multiple community service projects. The ‘Pack volunteered for “Wolves on the Prowl, Play for K” selling t-shirts as well as “Into the Streets.” They are making a difference in both the Loyola community and the Greater New Orleans Area.
