Men’s and Women’s Tennis Travel to Jackson for Final Match of the Season

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans men’s (2-6) and women’s (3-6) will begin the final weekend of the regular season with a doubleheader in Jackson, Miss. as they are slated to face Belhaven at 10 a.m. and Tougaloo at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Both matches will take place from the Belhaven Tennis Complex.

Both Wolfpack teams won their last match two weeks ago with the men posting a 8-1 win over Tougaloo and the women also defeating the Lady Bulldogs 7-2.

In doubles play, the no. 1 team of Loyola’s Devon Belcher and Matthew Farnham defeated Tougaloo’s Myles Creese and Douglas Walker 8-2. The Wolfpack’s no. 2 team, Joshua Laviolette and Tony Benjamin also bested their opponents, defeating Julius Gladney and Jimmy Pomerlee of the Bulldogs 8-4. Loyola defaulted the third doubles match giving the ‘Pack a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

In singles action, Loyola only dropped one game in 11 sets played. All Loyola men players won their matches with Belcher defeating Creese 6-1 and 6-4, Laviolette beat Walker 6-3 and 6-1, Farnham downed Julius Gladney 6-1 and 6-0, freshman Eduardo Garcia fought hard in three sets winning 2-6, 7-5, and (10-8), while Benjamin rounded out all LU winners 6-2 and 6-3. The Wolfpack defaulted the final singles match, giving the Bulldogs their second point.

For the women, Loyola’s Meghan deBaroncelli and Cristiana Krtalic won handily over Tougaloo’s Maya May and Carmen Burton 8-1. After Symone Booth and Alesha Regus of the Lady Bulldogs defeated the ‘Pack’s Katie Beargie and Alexandra Chater, they defaulted the final doubles match which gave Loyola a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. The Wolfpack women also won every singles match and only dropped one set in 11 played. deBaroncelli solidly defeated Burton 6-0 and 6-0, Beargie beat Booth 6-3 and 6-1, freshman Caitlyn Chambers won against Regus 6-1 and 6-4, Krtalic fought hard in tie break but won 6-2, 6-6 (10-7), and sophomore Chelsea Keene rounded out the winners defeating Catherine Robinson of Tougaloo 6-1 and 6-0. The Lady Bulldogs defaulted the final singles match giving LU the 8-1 win.

The 15th ranked Belhaven men (12-2) are currently on an eight-match winning streak, having beaten conference rivals Lee, Shorter, Emmanuel, and Spring Hill. Loyola and Belhaven were scheduled to compete earlier this season, but the match was canceled due to inclement weather.

The Lady Blazers of Belhaven (11-6) most recently won a close 5-4 match against Millsaps, and have won eight of its last 10 matches. The Lady Blazers and the Wolfpack women were also scheduled to compete earlier this season; however, the match was also canceled due to inclement weather.

The ‘Pack is currently 1-4 all-time against Belhaven with the only win of the series coming from the women back on Feb. 20, 2010. However, the ‘Pack leads the overall series with Tougaloo 5-0, which includes victories from both the men and women two weeks ago on Mar. 30.
