Men’s Basketball Looks to Prolong Win Streak

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team (17-9, 9-7 SSAC) will travel to Hattiesburg tomorrow to clash with William Carey (12-16, 8-8 SSAC) in their final road game of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside Clinton Gym.

The Wolfpack prolonged their win streak to three after defeating Auburn Montgomery on Saturday. The ‘Pack can contribute their success to late game execution, winning by margins of ten, four, and five during the three game span.

The 17 victories on the year is the team’s best outing since the 2008-09 squad finished 19-11. With two games left in regular season play and the conference tournament looming, the ‘Pack can deliver head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando’s best season in his eight year career at the helm of the ‘Pack.

Loyola is currently tied with Mobile atop the SSAC West standings with 9-7 records. Belhaven sits a half game back at 9-8. William Carey and Faulkner are currently in the SSAC Tournament play-in-game positions at one and two games out respectively, while Spring Hill still lingers at three games back.

Loyola has won six of their past seven divisional games in which the run started with a 72-60 win over William Carey inside The Den on January 26. In that game, Corey Gray scored a team high 26 points. Cameron Cates and Chris Joseph contributed double digit point performances as well with 13 and 10 respectively.

William Carey is coming off of a 59-70 loss to Southern University New Orleans on Monday night. However, the Crusaders have won back to back divisional games, ousting Belhaven on February 11 and Auburn Montgomery on February 16.

Loyola is now nationally ranked in five categories in the NAIA: 4th in free throw percentage (.736), 30th in three-point field goal percentage (.353), 41st in scoring offense per game (74.65), 47th in total rebound defense (34.27), and 49th in field goal percentage (.450).
