(Mobile, Ala.) Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team fell to the University of Mobile, 71-58 in a SSAC conference game Saturday night in Mobile.
Kyle Simmons hit a three pointer with 6:48 to cut the Rams’ lead to 52-48, but Mobile went on a 9-2 run to break open a close tilt. Cody Scott scored five of his eight points in the 2:22 stretch that opened up the game, and Mobile converted 10 of 12 free throws in the last two minutes to seal the contest.
The first half was an extremely close game as the largest lead was seven for the Rams, but it was short lived after an intentional foul was called on Kevin Calloway with 10:02 left in first half. Calloway fouled Ben Amoss as he was breaking out for an easy layup. Amoss hit both free throws and Robert Lovaglio scored on the ensuing possession to spark a 12-1 run for the Wolf Pack.
Lovaglio led Loyola with 17 points in the game, which leaves him just 11 points away from scoring 1000 career points for the Wolf Pack. He is 25th on the school’s all-time scoring list. McCall Tomeny, 13, and Simmons, 10, both scored in double figures for Loyola.
Mobile was led by Chris Richardson who scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half and Kwame Beard who scored 16 points on the strength of hitting 7 of 8 free throws. Julien Sargent led all players with nine rebounds.
The Ram defense was able to hold Loyola to 32% shooting in the second half after the Wolf Pack made 50% in the first half. Mobile shot 57% in the second half and 51% overall to break open the game. The closely contested game saw the rebounding margin go to the Rams 27-24.
