(New Orleans, La) Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team will open the SSAC Conference Tournament against Coastal Georgia on Wednesday at 12:45 p.m.at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama.
Loyola (15-13, 9-9) closed the season by losing back to back overtime games to Belhaven and Auburn-Montgomery which dropped the Wolf Pack to the fourth seed in the western division of the SSAC. The Pack will be playing Coastal Georgia (7-22, 5-13) who lost a tiebreaker to Truett-McConnell and finished as the fifth seed in the eastern division. The winner of the matchup will move on to the quarterfinals where they will play against top seeded and #2 nationally ranked Lee University (28-1, 16-1) at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, February 28th.
However, before moving on the Wolf Pack must dispatch the Mariners who ended the season by defeating Southern Polytechnic to clinch a spot in the tournament. Prior to that tilt, the Mariners had lost seven of their previous eight with their lone win a 22 point victory over Truett-McConnell.
The Wolf Pack ended the season by defeating #9 Faulkner on senior day before losing two consecutive games on the road in overtime. The final game of the season was a one point loss to AUM which meant the Warhawks finished in the third spot and received a bye to the quarterfinals while Loyola moved to the play-in game against Coastal Georgia.
Robert Lovaglio leads the Pack in scoring this year with an average of 19.9 points per game, which is the third highest mark in the conference. McCall Tomeny is 15th in the conference in scoring at 14.6 points a night on 53.3% shooting which is tied for fourth in the SSAC. Tomeny also pulls down a team high 6.8 rebounds a game.
Reggie Burke averages 16 points nightly to lead Coastal Georgia. Kentorey Johnson puts up 14.6 points a night and hits the glass to the tune of 8.1 rebounds a game. P.J. Reason rounds out the Mariners’ double figure scorers with an average of 12.6 points a tilt.
