NEW ORLEANS, La. – On Saturday afternoon, the Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team defeated Dillard University 70-59. Loyola moves to 5-2 on the year and sweeps the season series against cross-town foe Dillard.
The Wolfpack offense was powered by double-digit scoring performances from McCall Tomeny, Robert Lovaglio, Cameron Cates, and Corey Gray. Lovaglio registered 14 points and a team high eight rebounds. Cates led the team in scoring with 18 points on 7-9 shooting from the field. Gray tallied 12 points on 50% shooting and two of six from beyond the arc.
McCall Tomeny posted a career day in scoring, free throws, and steals. The freshman center achieved a personal best 16 points. Furthermore, Tomeny came into the game shooting 4-9 from the free-throw line, and then secured a career high 10-10 from the line today. In addition too, Tomeny posted a new career high of four steals.
“We expected a hard battle with Dillard based on the results from the first game. I told the team these guys would come hard to play. Give them credit, they didn’t quit,” said Loyola head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando. “I am very proud of our guys withstanding their runs, which showed a lot of poise and toughness in our part. I thought we also did a good job on our half court defense.”
Loyola shot 57.1% from the field, 30.8% from beyond the arc, and 75% from the free-throw line. The ‘Pack forced 19 Dillard turnovers which resulted in 19 points. In addition too, Loyola scored 30 of its 70 points in the paint. The ‘Pack maintained the lead for the entire match, with its largest lead of the day reaching 18 points.
Jamal Silas led the Bleu Devils offense, scoring 21 points on 7-15 shooting. Overall the team shot 47.2% from the field and 27.3% from three-point range.
The Wolfpack’s next match is November 29, when they travel across town to take on Xavier University at 7:30 p.m.
