NEW ORLEANS, La. – The 19th ranked Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team (21-3, 12-3 SSAC) came up short in the final minutes of play against the Belhaven Lady Blazers (21-6, 14-3 SSAC), losing by a score of 71-66 in the annual Cancer Awareness Game in The DEN on Thursday evening.
Freshman Raven Lane scored Loyola’s first three points as the ‘Pack jumped out to an early 13-0 lead. The Lady Blazers slowly crept back throughout the period, tying the score at 27-27 at the 4:35 mark. The ‘Pack would score a basket and a pair of free throws to rebuild its lead back to two points. LU went into the break up, 36-35 after a last second shot by Erika Leflore.
The Lady Blazers came out in the second half to cut in Loyola’s lead and would tie the game with a layup from Regena Jackson at the 13:10 mark. A pair of free throws from senior guard Kevia Council would put the ‘Pack back on top. Belhaven tied the game two more times and eventually would pull ahead by one after an Ashley Wakefield three pointer. LU jumped back to a five point lead at the 7:08 point but a 10-2 run by the Lady Blazers over the last three minutes gave them a seven point lead with fine minutes left in the game, which sealed the deal. Belhaven eventually took the game 71-66.
Council led Loyola with her second double-double on the year posting an impressive team-high 35 points and 10 rebounds. She also added two assists and a steal. The 5-8 guard also shot 87.5 (14-for-16) from the free throw line. Sophomore Jasmine Brewer also had double-figures with 13 points.
Senior guard Regena Jackson led the Lady Blazer attack with 39 points. Erika Leflore and Sarah Carr also contributed double-digit points as they scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Next up, the ‘Pack will travel to Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
