NEW ORLEANS, La. – The 19th ranked Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team (21-3, 11-3 SSAC) will take on Auburn Montgomery (12-14, 6-10 SSAC) for the second time this season when the two teams square off on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the AUM Physical Education Complex. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
Saturday’s meeting marks the fourth in the series that began last year. The Warhawks hold a 2-1 edge over the Wolfpack. LU won the previous contest this season where the ‘Pack came out on top, 75-48. AUM’s last win over Loyola came on Feb. 19, 2011, as the Warhawks defeated the Wolfpack 51-50.
Loyola enters Saturday’s rivalry game winners of six of its last seven contests. Most recently, the ‘Pack fell to no. 16 Belhaven, 66-71, in The DEN. Senior Keiva Council led Loyola with her second double-double on the year scoring 35 points and grabbing 10 boards. She also added two assists and a steal. Joining Council with double-figure points was sophomore Jasmine Brewer who added 13.
Council continues to rank amongst the best in both the Southern States Athletic Conference as well as the nation. She is second in the league and third in the NAIA in scoring with 22.8 points per game and 548 total points this season. The 5-8 guard also is third in Loyola’s history in career scoring with 1,723 total points.
Auburn Montgomery also lost its last game recording a 53-60 loss against William Carey, which broke a two-game winning streak for the Warhawks. In the loss, sophomore Keisha Moore collected a team-high 15 points. She also produced four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Moore was followed by junior LaKenya Drayton, who added 14 points, seven rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist.
For the season, AUM is led in scoring by Moore and Drayton, with averages of 13.5 and 9.1 points per game, respectively. Drayton also leads the Warhawks in rebounds with 6.5 per game.
Following Saturday’s contest, Loyola continues its road trip for its last away game of the season taking on William Carey on Thursday, Feb.24 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
