NEW ORLEANS, La. – The 20th ranked Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team (21-2, 12-2 SSAC) picked up its 21st overall and 12th conference win of the season, holding on to beat Faulkner University (17-8, 8-6 SSAC), 70-63, in The DEN on Saturday afternoon. the Wolfpack is now on a six game winning streak.
“It was one of our best defensive efforts that we have had all season,” said Loyola head coach Kellie Kennedy. “Our young players are starting to contribute more with each game which will provide us with a lot of options down the stretch.”
Senior Keiva Council led a well-balanced offensive attack scoring 19 points. She was followed by freshman Raven Lane with 14 points and sophomores Amy Moody and Jasmine Brewer, who had 13 points apiece. Council also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Both teams wasted no time with the defensive pressure, forcing multiple turnovers right out of the gate. The game remained scoreless for three and half minutes until the Wolfpack broke free with back-to-back fast-break layups from Brewer. Faulkner fought back scoring the next three baskets to go ahead 6-4. Later, Faulkner led briefly in the half as Spenser Cantrell’s three pointer put the Eagles on top 9-8 with 12:02 left in the half.
The Wolfpack answered with an 8-0 run with baskets from four different Loyola players culminating with a jumper by Megen Berner off an assist from Raven Lane. The Eagles responded with seven unanswered as a Christina Hayes basket tying the game at 16-16. Loyola outscored the Eagles 19-11 over the last 5:28 of the half to take a 35-27 lead at the break.
In the second half, the ‘Pack remained in front for the entire period and increased its lead to as many as 10 points. The Lady Eagles made a short run midway through the period to cut the lead to two points, but a 10-3 run sealed the game as Loyola made it 2-0 against Faulkner this year.
For the game, the ‘Pack out-rebounded the Lady Eagles 37-29. Offensively, LU shot 46.7 percent (21-45), while holding Faulkner to 42.1 percent (24-57). The Wolfpack held a sizable advantage from the free throw line converting 75.9 percent (22-29). Faulkner only converted 61.1% (11-18) from the charity stripe.
Junior Brittney Carter led the Lady Eagles with a game-high 26 points and eight rebounds. Senior Christina Hayes followed Carter with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Next up, the Wolfpack will host No. 15 Belhaven (20-6, 13-2 SSAC) in a pivotal SSAC West Division matchup. Belhaven currently holds a half game lead in the standings over Loyola for first place in the division. Tip off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in The Den.
