NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team picked up win number 20 this evening defeating the University of New Orleans 89-59. With the win, head coach Kellie Kennedy picks up her third 20 win season in her four years at Loyola. The Wolfpack now improve to 20-2 on the season, while the Lady Privateers drop to 0-22.
“I thought it was an overall great team win,” said Kennedy. “We had so many contributors having four players in double-digits. We shot the ball well. We got the ball inside and we were able to rebound. And despite the slow start, we were able to get some people in there and pick up our defense”
It was a record-breaking night for the ‘Pack as it had two players breaking career-highs. Senior Amy Sprout scored 18 points off of a 75.0 percent (6-of-8) shooting effort. The senior captain also contributed nine rebounds and a steal. Freshman Raven Lane also had a career night scoring 12 points off of an 80.0 field goal percentage (4-of-8) and 100.0 three-point field goal percentage (3-of-3).
Two more Wolfpack players scored in double-figures as sophomore Jasmine Brewer led all scorers tying her season-high 26 points. The SSAC and Jesuit Player of the Week also added 12 rebounds for her seventh double-double on the season. She shot a career-high 91.0 percent (10- of-11) from the floor. Senior Keiva Council also produced 21 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Sprout put the ‘Pack on the board first hitting a layup inside off the first possession. UNO tied it up with two free throws. With the score 2-2, the Lady Privateers hit back-to-back layups going in front 6-2. The Wolfpack remained down in the period until the 12:13 mark where Loyola scored six points in less than a minute. Council hit a free throw with 11:35 left to put the ‘Pack ahead for the first time since the opening seconds of the game. LU picked up the defensive pace the rest of the way holding the Lady Privateers without a field goal in over three minutes. The Wolfpack maintained its lead the remainder of the first half going ahead 42-30.
Council helped jumpstart Loyola after the break connecting on the first two baskets a minute and a half into play. The ‘Pack led by as many as 35 points in the second period and eventually took the 89-59 win.
LU out-rebounded UNO 61 to 39, and had 28 second chance points. 46 of the Wolfpack’s 89 points also came in the paint. Defensively, Loyola held the Lady Privateers to a 28.2 shooting percentage (20-of-71) and forced 14 turnovers.
Junior Mechel’le Thomas led UNO in scoring with 15 points. She was followed by sophomore Megan Buckley with 13 and junior Mirjam Sipos with 11. Freshman Tiffany Wallace led the Lady Privateers in the boards with 10.
The ‘Pack returns home this Saturday taking on conference foe Faulkner University in the DEN. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
