MOBILE, Ala. – Sophomore Jasmine Brewer led four players in double figures with her season-high 26 points as the Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team (18-2, 8-2 SSAC) earned its eighth Southern States Athletic Conference win of the season with an 82-57 victory over the University of Mobile (6-15, 4-8 SSAC) on Thursday at the H. Austill Pharr Gymnasium.
“Mobile gave us trouble with some matchups tonight,” said head coach Kellie Kennedy. “ We were able to make some sound adjustments at halftime to control their post game. I felt in the second half we were able to settle in and play our game. It’s tough to get a win on the road in this conference, so we’re obviously pleased with the outcome.”
To go along with her new season-high 26 points, Brewer chipped in six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. The 5-9 forward also shot 60.0 percent (9-for-15) from the floor and a perfect 100.0 (8-for-8) percent from the free throw line. Brewer was followed by senior Keiva Council with 17 points, sophomore Amy Moody with 12 and junior Megen Berner with 11. Council also contributed eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
“Jasmine was able to attack their defense,” added Kennedy. “They couldn’t guard her because she is so aggressive in the post.”
Loyola got on the board first in the game going up 5-0, but Mobile quickly responded with three straight baskets to lead 7-5. The Lady Rams led for the majority of the first half going up by as many as six points at the 11:04 point. After a LU timeout, the ‘Pack stepped up its defense holding Mobile without a basket for three minutes. Despite the defensive effort, Loyola themselves could not score until a Brewer steal and layup broke the spell with 8:00 minutes left in the period. The ‘Pack closed in on the lead with two minutes remaining, and forced a key turnover that resulted in a Brewer old fashioned three point play to go up 33-32. It was Loyola’s first advantage since the opening minutes of the half. The Wolfpack remained in front for the duration of the period, leading 40-32 at the break.
The ‘Pack shot 53.1 percent from the floor (17-of-32) and forced 10 turnovers. Brewer led a balanced Loyola offensive attack with 13 points heading into the locker room.
The Lady Rams started the second half blazing, scoring the first six points to pull within two points; however, the ‘Pack responded with back-to-back layups from Council and Moody. From there, LU maintained its lead and never looked back as the Wolfpack came out on top 82-57.
For the game, Loyola forced 25 turnovers, 18 of which were steals. Offensively, the Wolfpack shot 48.6 percent (34-for-70) and had 12 assists.
Senior Alice Honnery led Mobile with 12 points and 12 rebounds for her 13th double-double on the year. She was followed by freshman Briana Edwards with 11 points as well as freshman Lauren Bethly and senior Daphnee Freson with 10 a piece.
Next up, Loyola heads to Spring Hill Saturday, Feb. 24. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. CT.
