NEW ORLEANS, La. – The 23rd ranked Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team notched its eight Southern States Athletic Conference victory of the season with an 85-71 victory over the William Carey Lady Crusaders in The DEN Thursday evening. Senior guard Keiva Council scored a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Sophomore Amy Moody had 16 points, and SSAC Player of the Week Jasmine Brewer notched 14.
With the win, Loyola moves to 16-2 overall and 8-2 in the SSAC. William Carey drops to 8-10 and 5-6 in conference play.
Loyola took to the board first with a fast-break layup from Council. The Lady Crusaders bounced back with a basket from junior forward Crystal Tucker to tie the game at 2-2. The period swung back and forth until the 16:49 mark where it was tied six all. From that point, the Wolfpack went on a 9-1 run over the next four minutes. William Carey responded with a 7-0 run to put the Lady Crusaders within two points; however, Loyola bounced back and expanded its lead to as many as 14 points during the first half.
After taking a 43-33 halftime lead, Loyola rocketed out of the locker room going on a 16-6 run over the first nine minutes of the half to take its largest lead of the evening at 59-41. Council and Moody combined for 10 of the 16 points while the ‘Pack defense forced five turnovers and held the Lady Crusaders to only three field goals in the nine minute period. Over the remaining stretch, Loyola held a lead of no fewer than 14 the rest of the way as it defeated William Carey 85-71.
For the game the Lady Crusaders caused 29 turnovers that led to 36 Wolfpack points while William Carey only converted 15 points off of Loyola’s 18 turnovers. The ‘Pack also shot 71.4 percent (15-21) from the free throw line as the Lady Crusaders only converted on 57.9 percent (11-19) from the charity stripe.
Senior guard Chelsea Combest led the Lady Crusader scoring 15 points. Fellow senior guard TeAnna Carter followed Combest with 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Rounding out the leading scorers was freshman forward Ciera Sibley with 11 points.
The ‘Pack looks for back-to-back SSAC wins when it hosts Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday afternoon in The DEN. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT.
