No. 23 Women's Basketball Wraps up Road Slate with William Carey

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team (21-4, 12-4 SSAC) will play its final road game of the 2011-12 regular season on Thursday when it travels to William Carey (12-12, 8-8 SSAC) in the Clinton Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. CT.

Thursday’s game is the second meeting between Loyola and William Carey this season and the 36th overall. Loyola has won the previous two meetings in the series.

In this season’s earlier tilt, which took place on January 26, the Wolfpack came away with an 85-71 victory in New Orleans. For the game, Loyola was 54.8 percent from the floor (34-of-62), while William Carey finished at 54.9 percent (28-of-51). The Crusaders’ downfall came from the free throw line which it was only 57.9 percent (11-of-19). In addition, LU forced 29 William Carey turnovers that led to 36 points.

Senior guard Keiva Council led all scorers with 22 points off of a 50.0 percent (7-of-14) shooting effort and a 100.0 percent free throw (8-of-8) performance. The Houston, Texas native also tied her career-high six steals as well as adding five rebounds and three assists.

Loyola enters Thursday’s game having lost two consecutive SSAC matchups. The ‘Pack most recently posted a 59-63 heartbreaking loss at Auburn Montgomery on Saturday. Council scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed five boards. In addition to Council’s 23 points, sophomore Jasmine Brewer scored 13 points and freshman Janeicia Neely added 10 for Loyola. Junior Megen Berner grabbed eight boards to lead the ‘Pack in rebounding.

Council continues to lead Loyola in scoring on the season with 22.8 points per game. She ranks second in both the NAIA and SSAC in points per game. She also is third in total scoring with 571 points this season. The 5-8 guard is third on Loyola’s all-time scoring list with 1,746 career points. Council is followed by Brewer, who averages 16.3 points per contest. Brewer is also the ‘Pack’s leader in
rebounds with 7.4 boards per game.

William Carey has won two of its last three games, most recently edging past Auburn Montgomery, 60-53 in Montgomery. Juniors Erica Moore and Crystal Tucker led the Lady Crusaders in scoring with 19 points and 13 points, respectively. Tucker also added 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double on the season.

Tucker leads the team in scoring with 11.0 points on the season. She is the only William Carey team member to average double-figures. The 5-10 forward also leads the way in rebounding as she grabs 8.0 boards per contest.
