NEW ORLEANS, La. – Senior Rachael Nolan had a game high 18 points as Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball defeated Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 64-45 in the Wolfpack’s home opener Friday evening in The Den.
Loyola never trailed in the contest, scoring the first eight points of the game. Nolan opened with a bucket on the first Loyola possession and ended the run with a pair of free throws at the 16:57 mark.
Loyola extended the margin with a 14-0 run at the end of the period. The streak began with a Megen Berner runner in the lane off a fast break with 5:39 left in the half. Four minutes later, Nolan added two more of her 10 first half points to give Loyola a 36-12 edge with 1:03 remaining in the half.
Nolan, who was 7 of 10 from the field in the game, added another bucket as time expired to send the teams to the locker rooms with the score 38-14 Loyola.
After the break, OLLU cut the lead to 15 points at the 15:49 mark with a field goal by Stacey Darney off a Wolfpack turnover. It would be as close as the Saints would get the rest of the way.
The Wolfpack responded with a 13-3 run with a Libby Collyer free throw giving Loyola a 25 point advantage, the largest of the night 53-28, with 8:55 to play.
“It’s always great to win your home opener. Rachael Nolan did some great things for us scoring 18 points and getting 9 rebounds in only 21 minutes. It was another total team effort and everyone contributed in this win,” said Loyola head coach Kellie Kennedy.
Nolan and teammate Amy Sprout grabbed a team high nine rebounds each. Keiva Council had 10 points to round out the leaders for Loyola (2-0).
For OLLU (0-1), Kenisha McDade came off the bench to have 8 points and 9 rebounds. Jasmin Fuller grabbed a game high 12 boards.
The Wolfpack defense held the Saints to a 24.4% field goal percentage in the game, while Loyola converted 44.1% of shots taken.
Loyola returns to action on November 13 at Talladega College. Tip off is slated for 2 pm.
