NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the second consecutive day, Brian Pena and Claire Landry earned match victories at number one singles for the Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s tennis teams, but a number of close matches went the wrong way for the Wolfpack, as Belhaven escaped with a pair of conference team wins, 8-1 and 8-1.
Pena followed up yesterday’s super-tiebreaker win against Spring Hill College by taking another match the distance, this time shutting out his opponent in the decisive tiebreaker, winning the match, 6-1, 4-6, (10-0).
Pena and Carson Wahl battled to an 8-3 loss at number one doubles, while Joshua Laviolette and Jordan Hunting fell to BU at number two doubles, 8-3.
Landry also won her match at the women’s team’s top singles spot. Landry squeaked out a close two-setter, 6-4, 6-4, over BU’s Natalia Krier.
Other matches on the women’s side were also very close. LU’s number one doubles team lost in a pro-set, 8-5, while the number two doubles team fell, 8-6. Alexander Chater took her number six singles match to a super-tiebreaker, but fell just short, 1-6, 6-3, (2-10).
The women’s tennis team will take on the Savannah College of Art and Design on Monday, March 21 at 2 p.m. at the University of New Orleans tennis complex, while the men will take on Xavier University on Friday, March 25 at 3:30 p.m. at UNO.
