Westwego, La.- The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team snapped a four game losing streak with a pair of non-conference victories over the University of Mobile Tuesday evening at Segnette Field.
In the first game, the Wolfpack capitalized on five Mobile errors on the way to a 7-5 victory.
Senior Carl Labit (1-0) baffled the Rams, holding the visitors scoreless through six innings. In the seventh, Labit gave up four hits before recording an out on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Waltman. After another single by Brady King, Labit was lifted for Jeffery Castille, who earned the first save of his career by closing out the final two thirds.
Labit finished his night giving up five runs on nine hits and struck out two in 6.1 innings of work.
Loyola took the lead in the bottom of the second as Evan Turkish reached on an error by Derek Bourgeois. Turkish stole second and later scored on another Ram error as Phillip Cazayoux’s ground ball was misplayed by Ben Negus.
The Wolfpack scored five runs in their half of the third. Taylor Domengeaux and Turkish each had run scoring singles. Mobile made three more errors in the frame.
Karson Cullins gave the Wolfpack an insurance run in the fifth. The freshman right fielder plated Tyler Duplantis, who had a one out double to start set the table for Cullins.
For Mobile, Jacob Knowles (0-1) was tagged with the loss. He gave up seven runs, two earned on four hits and struck out three. Negus and Keith Granger each had two hits.
In the second game, Trey Campeaux (1-1) gave up only five hits in a complete game victory as Loyola completed the sweep with a 5-2 win.
The Rams struck in the top of the first inning as Campeaux gave up singles to the first three Mobile hitters to load the bases. Sam Mahoney bounced into a double play to plate Negus and Campeaux retired Ryne Phillips to end the threat, giving up only one run. The senior right hander settled in facing the minimum in the next two innings.
The Rams scored in the fourth with Jeremy Williams leading off with a double. Two hitters later, Josh Blaylock followed with a double of his own for the last Mobile run of the night. Campeaux cruised the rest of the way giving up only a walk and a double over the last 3.1 innings of work.
Loyola took the lead in their half of the third with a sacrifice fly by Garrett Lacour, scoring Slade Sanders. Taylor Domengeaux drove in Keifer Sanders with a double to give the Wolfpack the lead.
LU added a run in the fifth with a double by Duplantis scoring Lacour. Lacour gave the Wolfpack two insurance runs in the sixth inning with a single that scored Trey Sofio and Slade Sanders.
Corey Fountain (1-1) took the loss in relief for Mobile (3-2). He gave up three runs on three hits and walked five in 3.2 innings.
Loyola (4-6) returns to action this Friday with a double header against Thomas University at Segnette. Game one is set for 2 p.m. The series will conclude with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
