MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Sarah Tortorich and Raven Lewis set new school records, while several other Loyola University track and field athletes set personal records, at the Rhodes Invitational on Saturday.

Lewis, a freshman from New Orleans, set her second school record of the year, this time in the long jump. Lewis broke the 12-year-old record by five inches, recording a 16’1.75” mark, which was good for fifth in the event. Earlier in the season, Lewis set a school record in the triple jump at the Southern Miss Invitational a week before teammate Alexandra Lain broke the record again at the Louisiana Classics meet.

Tortorich broke a Loyola record that she herself set in 2010. Tortorich placed third in the 400 meter dash in 59.62 seconds, besting her previous record in that event by .16 seconds.

Tortorich and Lewis raced to third and fourth place finishes, respectively, in both the 200 and 400 meter dash events. Tortorich and Lewis both finished the 200 in 26.64 seconds. Meanwhile, Tortorich’s school record 59.62 finish in the 400 was followed closely by Lewis’s 1:00.08 time.

Sophomore Jenna Knoblach set a new personal best in the women’s 800 meter run, finishing in 2:30.12. Vanessa Righeimer set a new PR in the 5000 meters, at 19:30.05, as she took home third place in the event. Lewis added a 34’3” triple jump, good for second in that event, which gave her four top-five finishes at the meet.

On the men’s side, Daniel Afanador earned an eighth place finish in the 200 meters, completing the sprint in 23.18 seconds. Afanador added another top-ten finish by earning ninth place in the 400 with a time of 51.73 seconds.

Neal Outland ran a personal-best 53.43 seconds in the 400, while Abraham Thacker ran a personal record 17:26.29 in the 5000 meter run.

"It was a cold and raining most of the day, but we come out with a good showing and look to continue our progress toward the end of the season," Loyola head coach Andy Canegitta said.

The track and field teams will take off a week from competition before returning to action on April 9 at the USA Invitational in Mobile, Ala.
