Strong second half gives Loyola women a victory over Talladega

New Orleans, La.- Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team utilized a strong second half performance in a 59-55 victory over Talladega College Wednesday night in The Den.

The Wolfpack outscored the Lady Tornadoes 37-30 in the second stanza and used a 16-5 run to take their first lead since the 11:47 mark in the opening half. Rachael Nolan converted two of her six free throws on the night at the 11:11 mark to spark the rally.

Later, a bucket by Jasmine Brewer, who came off the bench to score 10 points and grabbed a team high eight rebounds, gave the Wolfpack their first lead of the half. After a three pointer by TC’s Ebony Richardson, Brewer scored a field goal and converted a free throw for a three point play to put Loyola up for good, 40-39 with 8:33 remaining.

Nolan finished with a team high 14 points and capped the run with a jumper to give the Wolfpack a 47-41 advantage with 5:45 to play.

The Lady Tornadoes could get no closer than two points within the Wolfpack lead. The last came with nine seconds as Richardson hit a three pointer to make it a one possession contest.

Keiva Council was fouled on the inbounds and secured the win for Loyola with a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining. Council finished with 13 points on the evening for Loyola (10-4).

For Talladega (2-13), Richardson had a game high 17 points. She converted 4 of 8 from behind the arc. Kyla Jones added 13 points and Daniele Padgett grabbed a game high 13 rebounds.

Loyola returns to action on Saturday against the University of New Orleans in The Den. Game time is set for Noon. It was previously scheduled for 2 p.m., but was moved due to the New Orleans Saints playoff game.
