(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University of New Orleans men and women’s tennis teams will compete in two matches this weekend in New Orleans at City Park.
On Friday afternoon the men and women’s teams are scheduled to face the Schreiner University Mountaineers who will be traveling from Kerrville, Texas. On Saturday, the teams will face Alcorn State. Matches are set for Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Schreiner College and Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Alcorn State in City Park.
This past weekend, the men’s and women’s tennis teams won two out of three matches, picking up victories over Tougaloo and Louisiana College. The men’s team (3-6, 0-4) came away with a 7-2 win over the Louisiana College Wildcats while the women (3-6, 0-4) swept 9-0.
In the match against the Wildcats, Tarun Surat, Jaron Belcher, and Joshua Laviolette won in the number 1, 2, and 3 singles positions without losing a game. David Mayhall and Gregory Jones won at the fourth and fifth positions with each only dropping two games. The doubles teams of Surat/Belcher and Laviolette/Mayhall scored 8-0 victories over their Wildcat opponents.
The women’s team had equal success this past weekend as sophomore Meghan de Baroncelli and Wesley Dejoie both swept their opponents at the number one and six singles positions. Chelsea Keene had a first set battle but was able to pull out the set 7-5 before defeating Jessica Clawson 6-3 in the second set to secure the point for the Wolf Pack. Madeline Smith also earned a tough victory as she took down Kelsey Hennigan 6-3, 6-4 to ensure the Loyola sweep.
