Tennis splits final matches of year

JACKSON, Miss. - The Loyola University men's and women's tennis teams defeated Tougaloo but fell to Belhaven in the final matchups of the regular season Saturday.

On the men's side, Loyola dominated the doubles matchups against Tougaloo. The number one team of Brian Pena and Jordan Hunting won 8-0, and Joshua Laviolette and Joshua Washington won at number two, 8-1.

Pena and Laviolette also took easy wins at numbers one and two singles, respectively. Pena won 6-1, 6-0, while Laviolette earned the "double-bagel" 6-0, 6-0 victory. Hunting won a tight match at number three, while Washington fell in a three-setter at number four. LU had to default at the number five spot. Overall, the men won, 5-2.

The Loyola women also took a 5-2 win from Tougaloo. All three doubles matches were tight. The number one and three teams won, 8-5 and 9-7, but the second team fell, 8-6.

Claire Landry and Frances Bonnin won easily at number one and three singles. Katie Beargie won her match at number two singles, 6-7 (3), 6-1, (12-10). Cristina Krtalic dropped a close 6-4, 6-4 match at four singles.

The teams had a much more challenging matchup against the Blazers. Landry battled out a tough match to take the win at one singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Landry and Beargie kept the number one doubles match close, but eventually fell, 8-5, making the score 8-1 overall.

Pena played another close match at one singles, but BU's Gabriel Prado was able to edge him out, 7-6 (8), 6-3. Pena and Hunting also played a tight match at one doubles, but fell, 8-4. Belhaven completed the season sweep over Loyola, 9-0.

The Wolfpack will take two weeks off from competition as they gear up for the SSAC Championship in Montgomery, Ala. That tournament is set to begin on April 29.
