NEW ORLEANS, La.- The Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s tennis teams fell to cross-town rival Xavier University on Saturday afternoon from the University of New Orleans Tennis Complex. The Wolfpack men fell 8-1, while the women lost 9-0.
On the men’s side, the No. 1 doubles team of Brian Peña and Joshua Laviolette competed extremely well in a tight match; however, the duo dropped their match 8-3 to Zach Taylor and Loic Didavi.
Loyola’s Laviolette fought extremely hard against Xavier’s No. 3 singles player Steffen Giles-Osborn before falling in a close two set match 6-2 and 6-1. At the no. 4 singles spot, LU’s Matthew Farnham played Xavier’s Corey Huggins very close, but also dropped his match in a close 6-3 and 6-3. Xavier defaulted the final match giving the Wolfack its one win for the men.
For the women, no. 1 seed Meghan deBaroncelli and no. 6 seed Alexandra Chater pushed Xavier to the limit. However, deBaroncelli lost 6-1 and 6-3, while Chater fell 6-1 and 6-3.
Both teams will return to play next weekend against conference rivals Spring Hill and William Carey. The Wolfpack will take on the Badgers of Spring Hill Friday, March 23 at 3 p.m. and the Crusaders of William Carey on Saturday, March 24 at 2 p.m. CT. Both matches will take place at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center.
