NEW ORLEANS, La. – The men’s and women’s tennis teams will open their 2012 season by hosting Louisiana State University- Shreveport and the University of Mobile this Saturday. Due to inclement weather in the area on Friday, the match between Mobile and LSUS was washed out. That match will now take place on Saturday at 10:30. The Loyola women are set to take on LSU-Shreveport at 8 a.m. from the University of New Orleans Tennis Complex while both teams will take on the Mobile at 1 p.m.
This year, the women’s team returns five of its top six players from a season ago, while adding three freshman to the lineup in Caitlyn Chambers, Meghan DeBaroncelli, and Nicole Szymanski. The men return three of its top players and add an impressive five newcomers in freshmen Carson Oberg, Emanuel Benjamin and Eduardo Garcia as well as transfer students Devon Belcher and Matthew Farnham.
“I am very excited to start the season,” said head coach Zubin Engineer. “My teams have trained hard and will compete to the best of their ability.”
The Wolfpack look to build off of last season where the women finished with a 2-10 and the men 2-9. Both wins came against Tougaloo College.
LSU- Shreveport is coming off a 5-6 season as they welcome back three returners in Bernadette Riles, Lauren Stevenson and Haley Yelverton.
The Lady Rams of Mobile will be coming off a 7-8 2011 season while the men are coming off a 6-8 season.
