(New Orleans, La.) Lauren Brand, Katie Broadbent and Tiffany Walker of the Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team have been named to the 2013-14 Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic team.
A junior from Raleigh, N.C., Brand was selected to the SSAC All-Academic team for the first time last season. This year, Brand participated in 90 sets, earning 164 kills and ranking fourth on the squad in kills as well as kills per game. She finished the season placing third on the team in hitting percentage (.202) and added 11 aces, two assists, 92 digs and 21 blocks to her resume.
This year’s award is Broadbent’s third SSAC All-Academic accolade. The 6-2 middle blocker from Roseville Calif. appeared in 20 matches as a senior, tallying 50 kills, 22 blocks and posting a .197 hitting percentage. She recorded a career-high eight kills against Martin Methodist College in October. Broadbent will graduate in May with a dual degree in accounting and finance.
Despite an injury plagued junior season, Tiffany Walker was able to take part in three matches at the conclusion of the season. Other honors awarded to Walker throughout her career include a SSAC All-Academic award and an NAIA Champions of Character award in 2012. The NAIA grants this award to student athletes who exemplifies the five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
SSAC All-Academic Awards are presented to student athletes who excel in the classroom. Nominees must have completed two semesters and earned at least 24 semester hours of college level work, have attained a grade point average of 3.25 or higher based on all courses attempted at their current institution and all previous institutions, and be participating in his or her sport during the semester in which the nomination is submitted.
