(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans track and field runners Claude Nelson and Sarah Tortorich were named SSAC track athletes of the week for the week concluding April 21st, 2013.
Nelson and Tortorich earned the award after racing in the Southeastern Lion Invitational on Friday, April 19th.
Nelson, a senior from Boston, Massachusetts, raced in the 200 meter and 4x100 meter races in Kenner. He set a school record in the 200 meter race as he posted a time of 22.75 which bested the previous school record of 22.76 which Nelson set last season. Nelson then ran the second leg of the 4x100 meter relay as the team had a time of 46.09. The team missed setting a school record by 1.07 seconds.
Tortorich, a New Orleans native, was close to setting two school records on Friday. She posted a time of 12.73 in the 100 meter dash which was .1 seconds short of a school record. She then ran the 200 meter dash in 25.95 seconds which fell .7 seconds short of the record at that distance. Tortorich also ran the second leg for the 4x100 meter relay team which finished the race in 52.00 seconds.
This is the second player of the week awards for both Tortorich and Nelson as they both captured the awards for the week of March 18th.
Both seniors were competing in their last regular season meet of the season. The Wolf Pack will be back in action for the SSAC Championship meet on Friday and Saturday April 26th and 27th in Rome, Georgia.
