Volleyball Continues Action in The DEN

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola women’s volleyball team (13-7) continues action at home for two matches against NCAA opponent West Alabama (13-7) and cross-town rival Xavier (14--4). The ‘Pack will take on the Tigers Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. and the Gold Nuggets Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.

The ‘Pack is coming off a 3-2 weekend at the Hampton Inn Wolfpack Invitational defeating Belhaven 3-2, Huston-Tilloston 3-0, and St. Thomas Houston 3-0 before falling to Missouri Baptist 0-3 and Texas A&M Kingsville 0-3. Junior Kailey Tuthill led all Loyola attackers this weekend tallying 37 kills. Three others collected 30 or more kills as freshman O’Neal McMullan added 35, sophomore Sabrina Stansberry collected 34, and freshman Lauren Brand contributed 32. Junior SSAC Player of the Week Samantha Worsham had a big weekend dishing out a total of 126 assists, 41 digs, and 16 service aces. She is ranked 8th in the NAIA in total service aces (47) and 9th in service aces per set (0.640). Defensively, senior Amanda Oldani led the ‘Pack with 59 digs while freshman Becca Burnett added 34.

Tuthill continues to lead the ‘Pack in kills on the season with178 total kills and 2.5 kills per set with Brand closely behind at 142 total kills and 2.0 kills per frame. Worsham leads the Wolfpack setters with 633 total assists and averaging 8.7 assists per set, while Oldani is Loyola’s top defender with 290 total digs and 3.9 digs per set. Stansberry has 37 blocks on the season and averages a team-best 0.6 blocks per frame.

West Alabama is coming off an 0-3 week falling to Montevallo 0-3, Christian Brothers 0-3, and North Alabama 0-3. The Tigers are led on offense by senior Angela Sanders with 222 total kills and 3.26 kills per set. She is the lone West Alabama player to average better than 2.5 kills per frame. Senior Alexis McHale dished out 697 assists on the season and a 10.10 assists per set average, while senior Casey Byrnes paces the defense with 242 digs and 4.57 digs per set. At the net, junior Chanel Davis collects a team high 57 blocks and 0.83 blocks per frame. The Tigers lead the overall series with the ‘Pack 6-11 and have won the last three.

Xavier won four of five matches last week, defeating UNO 3-0, Philander Smith 3-1, Tougaloo 3-0, and Edward Waters 3-0 but fell to Prairie View A&M 0-3. On offense, the Gold Nuggets are led by freshman Taylor Reuther’s 200 total kills and 3.6 kills per frame. Senior Patrice Hightower has a team-high 307 assists and averages 7.9 assists per frame, while Reuther also leads the defense with 180 digs and 3.2 digs per set. Freshman Moria Kirk contributes a team-best 50 blocks and 0.8 blocks per frame. The Wolfpack are undefeated in the series going 11-0.
