GAINSVILLE, Ga. – The volleyball team played two matches on the second day of their SSAC Cross-Over defeating Southern Wesleyan University 3-1 and Brenau 3-0 at the Brenau Gymnasium. In the first match, the Wolfpack took down Southern Wesleyan with a score of 29-27, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20 before knocking off to Brenau 25-16, 25-21, and 25-12. The wins move Loyola to 8-5 on the season and 6-3 in the SSAC, while the Southern Wesleyan Warriors fall to 17-4 and 4-4 in the SSAC. Meanwhile the Brenau Tigers drop to 8-10 and 1-7 in the SSAC. Loyola is now riding on a five-game winning streak.
“I’m excited about our progress,” said head coach Tommy Harold. “We went out and hit the standard of play we need to. Conference wins are always big. We are playing better and improving everyday as the year goes on.”
In the first match, the ‘Pack was led by freshmen O’Neal McMullan’s career-high 15 kills and Lauren Brand’s 10 kills. Juniors Kailey Tuthill and Samantha Worsham both had significant impacts as well. Tuthill added nine kills and Worsham dished out 35 assists. Once again senior Amanda Oldani chipped in double-digit digs with 24, tying her season-high to lead all passers in the match.
“As a team, we understand our responsibilities,” added Harold. “We are playing as one unit. These were tough matches against good teams. We came out, accepted the challenge and played very well.”
As for the second match, three Loyola players tailed eight kills. Sophomore Sabrina Stansberry gathered two blocks and hit .500 percent. Lauren Brand was certainly putting her brand on the Tigers as she hit .400 percent for the match. Tuthill was the third Wolfpack player with eight kills, producing 30 for the entire weekend. Defensively, freshman Becca Burnett led the way with 10 digs followed closely behind by Oldani with nine. Burnett also garnered two service aces.
Loyola returns home Tuesday for action in The DEN against cross-town rival Dillard at 7 p.m. CTS.
