NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team will continue its season this week at home as they host the Hampton Inn Wolfpack Invitational Oct. 7-8. Friday the Wolfpack will face Belhaven College (15-6) at 11 a.m. and Huston-Tilloston (1-15) University at 5 p.m. Loyola closes out the tournament with three matches on Saturday. The first will be against the University of St. Thomas Houston (11-6) at 10 a.m., the second is against Missouri Baptist University at 4 p.m., and the final match will be against Texas A&M Kingsville at 6 p.m.
“This weekend will be another great opportunity for us to improve and get some wins,” said head coach Tommy Harold. “Our focus right now is on the first match against Belhaven. It will be a great conference test.”
The ‘Pack is coming off an impressive 3-0 home victory against Dillard University, improving their winning streak to six matches. Loyola had three players hit for 1.000. Senior Ashley England led the way going six for six. Following right behind England was sophomore Sabrina Stansberry going five for five and junior Libby Collyer going three for three. The freshman sensation Lauren Brand led the ‘Pack in kills with nine while also hitting for .500. Junior Samantha Worsham also had an outstanding match with 21 assists and a new career-best seven service aces.
Loyola and Belhaven have met 47 times in the series that began in 1995. The Wolfpack have dominated the series winning 39 times including the first 13 meetings between the two teams. Head coach Tommy Harold is 19-2 versus the Blazers.
This will be the first match between Loyola and Huston-Tilloston. The Rams are 1-15 coming into the tournament with their lone win coming over Dallas Christian College.
Loyola is 4-3 in the previous meetings with St. Thomas, with the last match between the schools resulting in a 3-0 win for the ‘Pack. The Celts are 11-6 coming off of a win over Dallas Christian.
Loyola will also meet Missouri Baptist and Texas A&M Kingsville for the first time. The Spartans will head into this weekend with an 18-2 record, and the Javelinas with an 8-6 record.
