NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola Wolfpack (15-9, 8-4 SSAC) will host a pair of volleyball matches this week. The ‘Pack opens the week Tuesday night, with a 6 p.m. match against the West Florida Argos (18-8, 10-0) in The DEN. LU will then host conference rival Faulkner (18-14, 2-9 SSAC) on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Loyola comes into this week ranked in the top 45 in two categories 33rd in service aces per game (1.920) and 44th in total service aces (173). After a heartbreaking 3-1 loss at home to No. 19 Spring Hill, the Wolfpack regrouped posting a come from behind 3-2 victory on the road versus Belhaven. Freshman Lauren Brand led the way with 25 kills and hit .230 for the match.
Junior setter Samantha Worsham led the ‘Pack last week with a new career high 59 assists during last Saturday’s win at Belhaven. The Chicago native averages 8.83 assists per set while also ranking 12th in the NAIA in total service aces (54) and service aces per set (0.610). For the season, Worsham is second on the team in digs with 270 and averages 3.03 digs per set.
The West Florida Argos enter this week with a 18-8 overall record and 10-0 conference record. After starting off the year 3-7, West Florida went on a 12 game winning streak. The Argos are 15-1 since September 17.
Sophomore middle hitter Lindsay Homme leads the Argos with 286 kills while maintaining a 0.306 hitting percentage. Homme is second on the team with 73 blocks and 17 service aces. Junior defensive specialist Anna Stoecklein leads the West Florida defense with 369 total digs and 4.10 digs per set.
Tuesday’s meeting between Loyola and West Florida will be the fourth matchup between the two schools. The Argos lead the series 3-0, posting a 3-1 win last season at home.
Faulkner enters the week ranked in the top 45 in five categories: 14th in total service aces (209), 25th in total digs (1,839), 26th in total blocks (232), 31st in total kills (1,335), and44th in total assists (1 ,183). Last week, the Eagles went 1-2 posting a 3-1 win against Martin-Methodist (Tenn.) but falling 0-3 to Spring Hill and Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.).
Senior outside hitter Neysa Hernandez leads the Eagles with 298 kills and 2.6 kills per set. She is second on the team in defense with 361 digs for the season. Sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Bell ranks 5th in Division 1 in total service aces (57) and 40th in service aces per game (0.490).
Loyola has won the last eight matches against Faulkner, leading the overall series 17-6. The last meeting between the schools came on Oct. 1 where the Wolfpack defeated the Eagles 3-2 in Montgomery.
