(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball team will travel to the Generals Softball/Baseball Complex to take on LSU Alexandria in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 8th with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
The Wolf Pack (10-10) is coming off a doubleheader split against Calumet College of St. Joseph on Thursday afternoon. The Wolf Pack lost game one 2-0 as Calumet scored two unearned runs in the second inning. However, Loyola responded in game two as Daniel Posway (4-1) pitched six shutout innings while striking out five and Conor Thurman picked up his third save of the season. Brandon Snow had an RBI groundout to score Brian Reaney in the second inning and Andrew Fournet scored the eventual game winning run off a wild throw from the Crimson Wave third baseman.
LSUA (14-5), who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Poll, will play a doubleheader against Ashford on Friday before they take on the Wolf Pack on Saturday. They currently hold a seven game winning streak which includes a four game sweep of Wiley College last weekend. The pitching staff gave up three runs in the set as they outscored Wiley 34-3.
Loyola will send Kevin Lindsey and Joel Buhler to the mound in the doubleheader. Lindsey (3-2) sports a team best 1.19 ERA as he has pitched 30.1 innings while only allowing four earned runs this year. The sophomore righthander has pitched two complete games in five starts. Buhler (2-3) leads the team with 22 strikeouts in 28 innings. He has compiled an ERA of 3.21 as the Wolf Pack pitching staff ranks 26th in the NAIA with a team ERA of 2.84.
Jack Nicholson leads the team with a .350 average, 21 hits, five doubles, 11 RBI’s and 26 total bases. He has been excellent defensively as the third baseman ranks 47th in the NAIA with 49 assists. Brandon Snow tops the team with 13 runs and five stolen bases. The senior second baseman has four doubles and eight RBI’s this season.
The Generals pitching staff is fronted by Kirk Savoy who is 5-0 this season with a 0.56 ERA in 32 innings. He has tallied 38 strikeouts and only allowed 15 hits and two earned runs. He has pitched two complete game shutouts. Rynn Touchet (2-2) has a 2.96 ERA in five starts. He has 15 strikeouts in 24.1 innings and has pitched one shutout in 2014.
Dylan Edmiston has two home runs to pace the Generals offense. Bond Babin has a team best 16 RBI’s, 25 hits, and 18 runs. Babin has compiled a .373 average and 7 steals during the 2014 campaign. Michael Collado has 16 runs and 8 steals while batting .328.
Loyola and LSUA have played 24 times during Loyola’s “new era” of athletics. Loyola has won 9 of those contests while LSUA has taken 15 including sweeping a four game set last season. On March 19th, 2013 Loyola fell 6-3 as a late rally came up short and then lost 2-1 as the Generals scored the winning run on a wild pitch. LSUA won 5-1 and 10-1 in a doubleheader two weeks later on April 2nd.
