(Mobile, AL) Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball team defeated Jesuit rival Spring Hill College with a dominating 78-57 victory on Saturday in Mobile, Alabama.
Loyola jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game as Jasmine Brewer and Rebekah Greer scored all nine early points. The Badgers responded with an 8-2 run led by four quick points from Sha Sha Buchanan.
Loyola then went on a 13-6 run. They slowly added to their lead which was up to 43-34 at halftime. Spring Hill was never able to get the game closer than the nine point difference they had at halftime as the Wolf Pack controlled the second half on their way to the win.
Brewer led a great team effort as five players scored nine or more points. Brewer finished with 18 while pulling down nine rebounds. Megen Berner also secured nine rebounds while scoring 12 points. Greer hit four three pointers as part of her 16 point game. Janeicia Neely tallied nine points and seven assists. Katie Youngblood was in the starting lineup for the second straight game and responded with nine points and a career high eight assists. Her previous high was five assists, which she had in back to back games against Southern Poly and Xavier earlier in the year.
Spring Hill was led by 14 points from Buchanan. Leah Washington added 10 points while grabbing a team high eight rebounds. Elissa VandeWaa had eight assists for the Badgers.
Loyola shared the ball as they had 24 assists on 32 made field goals. They won the rebounding battle 44-38 and shot 49% while holding the Badgers to 34% shooting. Spring Hill got 35 bench points to only 14 from the Wolf Pack.
The victory moves Loyola (10-13, 7-8) into a tie with Spring Hill (11-14, 7-8) for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Division of the SSAC. However both teams are only a half game back of fourth place Belhaven.
The Pack will be back in action on Saturday, February 16th as they host Faulkner University. The Senior Day game will tip off at 2:00 p.m. in The Den.
