(Corpus Christi, TX) Loyola University New Orleans fell 11-6 to St. Cloud State University on day two of the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach South Texas Baseball Classic.
Loyola started the game well as Tony Asta sat down the Blizzard in order in the first inning. In the Wolf Pack half, Philip Cazayoux reached on an error and made it to third base on two wild pitches. Karson Cullins drove in Cazayoux with a groundout to the right side of the infield.
However, the lead did not last long as St. Cloud State put up four runs in the second inning. Michael Jurgella drove in two runners that reached on walks with a double to left center field. Steve Rindelaub singled home Jurgella and a couple batters later Phil Imholte brought home Rindelaub with his own single.
The Wolf Pack got two runs back in the third inning as Carmelo LoSauro doubled home Kevin Lindsey and Karson Cullins with a shot down the left field line. The Blizzard scored three runs in the fourth inning before adding onto the lead with a run in the fifth and sixth innings.
Loyola was able to cut into the lead with a three run fifth inning. Britt Pellegrin picked up an RBI with a double to left center, which scored Brandon Snow. Then Pellegrin and Cullins scored when Daniel Pappas reached base on a throwing error by Rindelaub. The Blizzard added two insurance runs in the ninth inning to help ensure the victory.
Loyola's Tony Asta (0-1) picked up the loss after giving up four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. LoSauro finished 1 for 5 with two RBI's. Cullins went 0 for 4 but picked up a RBI and two runs.
Adam Herlander (1-0) picked up the victory after relieving Nick Maiers. Maiers gave up two earned runs in four innings. Herlander also worked four innings while giving up three runs, none of which were earned. Offensively, St. Cloud was led by Jurgella who went 2 for 5 with three RBI's and a run. Eric Loxtercamp went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI's for the Blizzard.
St. Cloud State (1-1) started the Classic by losing 2-0 to Texas A&M Kingsville on Friday night. They entered the Classic with a preseason rank of third in Division II of the NCAA.
Loyola (3-7) will look to get their first victory of the three game classic in the finale as they will be playing against Texas A&M Kingsville at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 10 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
