(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans will close out the 2013 slate with a matchup against crosstown rivals Dillard University at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 30th in The Den.
The Wolf Pack (3-6) will look to rebound from a three game skid which included losses to SUNO, Dillard, and Xavier. In their last contest, a 55-44 loss to #25 Xavier, McCall Tomeny led the way with 12 points and six rebounds. Kyle Simmons scored nine off the bench and Mason Ibert tallied six points and eight rebounds.
Dillard (3-1) hasn’t played since their 54-47 victory over Loyola on November 30th. Tyrone Williams scored 17 points while Houston Chatman had 12 points and six rebounds in that game. Jarrain Jenkins grabbed 10 rebounds while Jordan Kilson dished out five assists. In that game Loyola got 15 points and 10 boards from Tomeny. Simmons scored 13 points and Roco Gandara pulled down 10 rebounds for the Pack.
Loyola’s stellar defense continued in their previous matchup as they held Dillard to 33.3% shooting. However, the Pack were cold from the field as they finished shooting 22.2% and made only 1 of 15 shots from the three point line. The Wolf Pack held an advantage at the free throw line attempting 35 to 13 by Dillard. Loyola out rebounded Dillard 50 to 45.
Tomeny leads the Pack this season with 18.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Simmons chips in 11.9 points and two assists per game. Gandara grabs 5.5 rebounds and is tied with Nate Pierre for the team lead with 7 blocks. Ibert has a team best 10 steals while Jalen Gray averages 2.3 assists per contest.
Chatman leads the Bleu Devils with 12.5 points while having played every minute for Dillard so far this season. Williams scores in double figures as well with 11.8 points per game. Jenkins pulls in 7.3 rebounds while Jeremy Rixner tallies 2.5 blocks per night. Kilson has averaged 3.8 assists a contest.
Last season, the Bleu Devils and Wolf Pack faced off twice with Loyola coming away winners in both contests. The Pack won 80-73 on December 8th in The Den thanks to 33 points from Robert Lovaglio. Simmons scored 22 while Tomeny chipped in 14 to contribute to the Loyola win. The Pack scored a decisive 73-58 win on January 16th as Lovaglio and Tomeny each scored 22. Dillard holds a 25-11 all-time advantage in the series between the two New Orleans schools.
