(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s track and field teams are set for their final meet of the year at the Black and Gold Invitational. The meet will take place at the Marshall Bell Track and Field Complex on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m. while the running competitions start at noon.
SSAC javelin champion Anthony Parker is coming off a career weekend setting the Loyola record of 47.89 meters, while posting the top mark in the conference. The sophomore from New Orleans bested the previous school record of 42.47 meters set by Billy Reames in 1996. Parker will also compete in the long jump.
Christian Lynch will join Parker in the long jump as well as racing in the 100m and 200m dashes. Lynch is the school record holder in the long jump with a mark of 7.00 meters set at the Mississippi College Twilight Invitational on April 4th. He also broke the school’s 100m record twice this past weekend at the SSAC Championship. Lynch finished the preliminary race with a mark of 11.00 which defeated Chris Vo’s 1997 mark of 11.01. Lynch ran faster in the finals as he placed fourth with a 10.94 second time again setting a Loyola record.
The 200m represents the Wolf Pack’s deepest event with Justin Johnson breaking the school record four times this season. Vincent Manuel and Lynch have each posted times below 22.75 which was Loyola’s top mark coming into the track campaign. Johnson took fourth this past weekend at the SSAC Championship 200m race with the season’s best mark of 22.09.
Toren Arnold is coming off a 3rd place finish at the SSAC Championships in the 800m. He will compete in that distance along with Mario Ramirez. Arnold holds the school’s 800m record as he bested the previous best five times this season including a time of 1:57.43 this past weekend. Ramirez will compete after a personal best 800m time at the SSAC Championships with a time of 2:03.27.
Paul Freese and Mike Corso will race in the 1500m while Corso also competes in the 5000m race. Freese and Corso each have been within two seconds of a new school record in the 1500m this year. Freese came closest to Richard Bouckaert’s 2004 mark of 4:10 when he set the season high time of 4:10.89 earlier this year. Corso set the school’s 5000m record at 15:49.09 at the Mississippi College Twilight Invitational.
Maddie Guidry will lead the women’s team after taking second place in the SSAC pole vault competition this past weekend. She cleared a height of 2.88m to establish a Loyola record. Stevie Baray-Forget will make her Wolf Pack debut by competing in the discus and javelin events at the Black and Gold Invitational.
Kennedi Henneberger and Emma Larson will race each other as well as the clock in the 800m. Henneberger set a career best mark of 2:30.14 while Larson’s season high in the distance is 2:31.95. Henneberger will also run the 1500m race. She has Loyola’s top three marks in that event this season including a time of 5:06.11 set at the Mississippi College Twilight Invitational.
Harley Augustine will round out the Wolf Pack competitors as she competes in the 400m hurdles and the high jump. Augustine has a season best 400m hurdles mark of 1:13.24 which came at the SSAC Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama. She also had the top high jump mark this past weekend with a 1.47m.
This is the last regular season meet of the 2014 year for the Wolf Pack track and field team. Loyola student-athletes have established 12 new records so far this season with nine coming on the men’s side.
