WESTWEGO, La. – The Loyola University Wolfpack baseball team won a doubleheader against SSAC opponent Mobile on Saturday, completing the five-game season sweep of the Rams. The ‘Pack won game one, 2-1, and took the final game, 5-2.

Brandon Snow had three hits on the afternoon to lead the way for the Wolfpack offense. Evan Turkish hit a three-run home run to help seal the game two victory. George Smith and Taylor Domengeaux each earned complete game victories. Justin Beck and Jeremy Williams each had three hits for the Rams.

Loyola (13-25, 5-4 SSAC) started out strong in game one, scoring a run in the first to take an early lead. Domengeaux and Ryan Scott each singled with one out, putting runners on first and third. Chris May then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Domengeaux.

For several innings, it looked like LU’s first inning score would be the game’s only run. In both the fourth and the sixth innings, Mobile (23-14, 5-7 SSAC) left the bases loaded. Loyola stranded two runners in several innings.

Mobile finally crossed the plate in the top of the seventh. Beck led off with a single. Smith proceeded to strike Ben Negus and Williams out. Loyola catcher Bradley Brunet nearly picked Beck off of first during the Negus at-bat, but a close call went Mobile’s way, extending the inning. The next two batters reached on walks, and Rams catcher Sam Mahoney hit a single, scoring Beck and tying the game at one.

In the bottom of the inning, Snow and Brunet each reached base on singles. Philip Cazayoux then attempted a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Instead of getting the out at first, pitcher Josh Blaylock threw to third base and overthrew his man, allowing Snow to score and win the game for the ‘Pack, 2-1.

Mobile started the second contest out with a run in the first. Beck led off with a single, stole second, and scored off of Williams’ single.

The game remained at 1-0 for the next three innings. Evan Turkish gave LU the lead when he hit his first career home run with two runners aboard. The shot was a no-doubter deep over the right field fence.

The ‘Pack added two more in the sixth. With two outs, Snow singled and Steve Daigle hit a double down the left field line. Both runners would score when Cazayoux reached base on an error. A Ram comeback attempt in the top of the ninth came up well short, as Domengeaux (3-6) earned his second straight complete game. His ERA is 1.50 over 18 innings in his last two outings.

Loyola will take to the road next week, starting with a doubleheader at LSU-Alexandria on Tuesday, April 5 starting at 2 p.m. and continuing with a three-game series at AUM next weekend.
