NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans men’s tennis team fell to the University of Mobile on Friday afternoon, 8-1, while the women’s team lost, 9-0.
Brian Pena fought back from a first-set setback against Mobile’s number-one singles player Guilherme Lorenco to earn the win, 4-6, 6-0, (10-5). At four singles, Christian Manrubia played UM’s Billy Musgrove to a close first set, 7-5, before defaulting the second. Jordan Hunting and Joshua Washington each won three games at five and six singles, respectively, but fell to the Rams.
On the women’s side, one and two doubles were very competitive. The number-one team of Frances Bonnin and Katie Beargie lost to UM, 8-5. Alexander Chater and Cristiana Krtalic at number-two doubles pushed Mobile to the limit, losing a tight match, 9-7. In singles action, Krtalic played UM very hard in the first set, falling to Nancy Machen, 6-4, 6-0.
The teams will return to play on Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m. against conference rival Spring Hill College. That matchup will take place at the tennis complex at the University of New Orleans.
