Wolf Pack Tennis Teams Split Final Matches of the Year

JACKSON, Miss. - The Loyola University men’s (3-7) and women’s (4-7) tennis teams defeated Tougaloo on Saturday afternoon, but fell to the Belhaven Blazers in the final matches of the regular season. Both teams shut out Tougaloo 9-0, but lost 8-1 against Belhaven.

“On Loyola’s centennial, I am pleased with both teams’ performances,” said head coach Zubin Engineer. “The men improved their total wins this season by one. The women also equaled their best performance since 2010 by winning four matches this year.”

On the men’s side, Loyola dominated the doubles matches against Tougaloo. The no. 1 team of Brian Peña and Joshua Laviolette won 8-2, and Devon Belcher and Matthew Farnham won at no. 2, 8-1. Freshmen Eduardo Garcia and Tony Benjamin won their first doubles match of the year as the no. 3 team, winning 8-2.

Belcher played extremely well at the no.1 seed and won a hard fought 6-2 and 6-4 match against Myles Creese. Peña came out on top as the no. 2 player earning a 6-1 and 6-0 victory over Tougaloo’s Douglas Walker. Joshua Laviolette earned a shutout versus Julius Gladney 6-0 and 6-0 at the no. 3 spot. Farnham, Garcia, and Benjamin all posted one set wins as Loyola took the final match 9-0.

The Wolfpack women also took a 9-0 win from Tougaloo. The no. 1 team of Meghan deBaroncelli and Frances Bonnin won solidly 8-2. The no. 2 doubles match was tight, but the dynamic duo of Chelsea Kenne and Alexandra Chater pulled off the 8-4 victory. Tougaloo defaulted the final doubles match, giving LU a 3-0 lead heading into singles action.

deBaroncelli and Bonnin won easily at the no. 1 and the no. 3 singles spots as they each posted 6-0 and 6-0 victories. Katie Beargie won her match as the no. 2 singles play 9-7 over Alesha Regus. Freshman Caitlyn Chambers and Chater both won 8-1, and Tougaloo defaulted the final match giving Loyola the 9-0 shutout.

It proved to be a tough match against the 15th ranked Blazers from Belhaven for the Wolfpack men. Belcher battled out a tough match to take the win at the no. 1 singles spot, 8-6 against Nicolas Osorio. Peña and Laviolette kept the no. 2 and no. 3 singles matches close, but fell 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1 respectively.

deBaroncelli played a close match at the no. 1 singles position, and bested her opponent,
Ana Paulette Arregyue, 6-3 and 6-1. dBaroncelli and Bonnin also played a tight match at the no. 1 doubles team, but fell 8-1 to Arregyue and Rachel Earnheart.

The Wolfpack will take less than a week off from competition as they prepare for the SSAC Championships in Montgomery, Ala. The tournament is set to begin on April 19 from Lagoon Park Tennis Center.
